Description

vintage, rare glass bottle that contained JAX Beer. This bottle is light green in color and is embossed JAX BEER on both sides with a portrait of Andrew Jackson on his horse bet
ween the two words. The bottle, which is 9 1/2" tall and 2 1/2" in diameter at the base, was made to bottle beer at the Jackson Brewery in New Orleans, Louisiana.) Bottles embossed with Andrew Jackson on a horse were only produced until about 1935. As you can see by the photos, the bottle has some wear and a bit of clouding on the inside. There are no chips.
The bottle is marked on the bottom Jackson Brewing Co. New Orleans. According to what I've read, Jackson Brewery was founded by Lawrence Fabacher in 1890 as Jackson Bohemian Brewery; its name was later changed to Jax Beer and finally Jackson Brewing Company, after Andrew Jackson and Jackson Square. It soon grew to be a prominent regional brewery and it, along with Dixie, were the only New Orleans breweries to survive Prohibition.
In 1935, Jackson Brewing Company entered a legal dispute with Jacksonville Brewing Company in Jacksonville, FL over the "Jax Beer" trademark, used by both companies. This resulted in a compromise in which Jacksonville Brewing Company got exclusive rights to sell in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, while Jackson Brewing got states to the west.
